United Arab Emirates (UAE) is home to some of the major ports, immense wealth, and a booming tourism sector. Not only is it known for world-class dining and opulent shopping, but it has also become the center of trade, travel, and finance. As an educator, if you are planning to teach English in the UAE, you have selected the right TEFL destination. However, combined with its small size, the UAE is one of the most competitive job markets in the world when it comes to teaching English abroad.

If you are planning to establish yourself as an English teacher in the UAE, here are certain things you need to know.

Is It Possible To Teach English In The UAE Without A Degree?

The straight and simple answer is NO. While some prefer a degree in the subject you will be teaching, the majority of schools in Dubai prefer teachers with at least a bachelor's degree. A teaching license, a TEFL certification, and/or previous teaching experience are additional prerequisites.

Even so, some schools in other emirates, such as Fujairah or Ajman, will employ undergraduates as teachers as long as they have TEFL certification. The UAE Ministry of Education sets the requirements for a bachelor's degree and teaching certifications to meet the visa requirements for teaching positions. Before searching for teaching positions in the UAE, obtaining a TESOL, CELTA, or TEFL certificate is strongly advised.

What Are The Requirements For Teaching English In UAE?

Even though different schools, colleges, and universities have different requirements, there are some common qualifications required by all. This includes:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a reputed organization
  • At least 120 hours of TEFL certification from a globally accredited institution
  • A valid teaching license from the host country
  • At least 2-3 years of teaching experience
  • Medical clearance report from UAE
  • Criminal clearance record

Is It Safe To Teach In The UAE?

Living and teaching in the United Arab Emirates is safe. It is the world's second safest country. The horrific news from its neighboring countries should not be taken as gospel. The UAE is still an Islamic nation despite having a diverse society as a result of the large influx of foreigners.

In general, its inhabitants are kind and accommodating. But you must become familiar with customs and culture if you want to have a fun and secure stay.  Teaching English in the United Arab Emirates (or living there) will not differ from teaching in any other foreign country as long as you respect local customs and laws.

Do I Need To Know Arabic to Teach English In The UAE?

The real answer is NO. As a global hub, the United Arab Emirates speaks English as a second language. Most advertisements, restaurant menus, and street signs are written in English, with Arabic translations available. While conversing with Emiratis and other Arabic-speaking foreigners is not required, it is a plus since they will respect your efforts to learn their language and culture.

Additionally, if you have experience in other Arabic-speaking countries, some schools find that to be advantageous. Along the road, you'll also notice that picking up a few Arabic words will enable you to strike up a friendly discussion with UAE citizens.

Types Of Opportunities In The UAE

If you are planning to teach English in the UAE, here are some places where you can find work:

  • Private Schools

Private school days run from Sunday through Thursday from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm, with one hour set aside for lunch. The best contemporary facilities, such as computer labs, gyms, and theaters, are found in these schools.

They adhere to a curriculum that is similar to what you are accustomed to in your native nation.  Private school students are typically motivated and enthusiastic, with the majority of them being ex-pats. Coeducation is permitted in nearly all private schools.

  • Public Schools

All citizens of the UAE can now attend public schools, but UAE nationals are entitled to free education. You will get the opportunity to participate in the current reform of the UAE's educational system. To help the nation transition from its traditional educational model, English teachers and Arabic teachers are paired.

Typically, there are 20 to 30 students in each class, and gender-based divisions exist. Male instructors are restricted to teaching only men, while female teachers are permitted to instruct students of any gender. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn about the rich culture of the Emirati people.

  • Language Schools

The strong desire among adults and professionals to enhance their business English has led to the arrival of well-known language school chains in the United Arab Emirates. Language school work schedules are based on your students and typically take place on the weekends and in the evenings.

  • Private Tutoring

You can work as an English teacher for Emiratis and expats as a side gig. You might even get the opportunity to instruct the princes and princesses of the seven emirates. Some organizations are in charge of hiring people for these positions. And, to work as a tutor part-time, you must have your visa (resident, spouse, or parent).

Another option is to make connections with other foreign residents of the nation who might know of any families in need of at-home tutors for their children. This is a great way for you to make extra money.

Live And Teach In The UAE

Teaching English in the UAE can be a lucrative option owing to its high and tax-free salary. However, you do need to have a degree along with having completed in-class or online TEFL courses for being able to qualify. This country will not only allow you to learn about new cultures and have new experiences but also widen and enrich your life with knowledge and skills.
